A couple of years ago I was introuced to the yoni vaginal steam by an amazing Maya massage therapist, Maria Renner. She explained how to make it at home (but also you can schedule at a spa, for example. I thought it was interesting but recently I decided to try once more, creating a ritual before starting the steam to enhance this experience, not only physical, but mentally and spiritually and here I am sharing my experience with you.
First, if you are new to this practice, yoni vaginal steam is an ancient remedy that has been used for centuries by women all over the world to support women’s wellness. It is made with hot water and herbs which produce a steam that is used to nourish the “yoni”, which in is a Sanskrit word meaning “vagina,” or “womb,” “origin of life”, “goddess”.

1) Easy menstrual discomfort
Can improve the menstrual cycle by reducing pain and bloating and also, by regulating irregular or absent menstrual cycles. How this happens? Because after herbs release their cleansing and healing oils into hot water, all their benefits are carried by steam to the porous skin of the outer labia, which continue to be carried through the bloodstream into the uterus, helping to expel the stuck material that causes discomfort during menstruation.
Steaming helps to draw toxins and clears congestion from your womb. Also, the warm temperature and moisture cause physical toxins to be released from cells into the lymphatic fluid, which is expelled from the body as sweat.
3) Helps with lubrification
This practice helps to increase circulation and lubrication, which can help increase (yes!) libido. And we feel sexier!!
Yoni steaming is a great way to connect deeply with yourself and the power of your yoni. It is a quite experience to turn on the potent energy of our wombs and to unblock creativity, abundance and self-love.
But before doing your yoni steam, avoid if:
You are menstruating
You are pregnant
If you have spontaneous heavy bleeding
When you are having hot flashes
Do not use plastic bowls. Toxins from the plastic can leak into the water. The best option will be a clay, glass or stainless-steel pot.
And make sure to get the right herbs. Look for local brands that produce yoni steam blends and check which herbs are blended. I used this amazing blend below from Mortar + Pestle Herbs.
Like I mentioned, to enhance my experience in different levels, I set a ritual. I love rituals! They help us to set the tone, the environment and I believe it makes us to connect body, mind and soul.
For my ritual I put together sage, rose water, a tarot deck, a relaxing playlist, a notebook and other symbols that were important for me, like crystals and candle. First, I began by cleaning the environment by burning sage and then spraying rose water to bring love, kindness and protection. Then, I picked one tarot card asking for a message for that experience. Then a meditated for a little bit and started wrapping myself with two blankets to help me with the heat. Also, I wore socks to keep my whole body warm.
I placed the bowl with the hot water and herbs under me, while I was sitting on chair with towel, having part of my body out. I set up the timer for 20 minutes. On the first 10 minutes I relaxed and the last 10 minutes, I changed the position to the yoga child’s pose, where I could also do some journaling. Amazing!
